Shammai: Villain, or Misunderstood?

Date:              Thursdays, October 20th, 27th, and November 3rd
Time:             7:45 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Instructor:    Rabbi Jennifer Greenspan
Fee:                $15 members; $30 non-members

Throughout Rabbinic Text, we hear of two competing schools of thought, headed by two scholars: Hillel and Shammai. Hillel is always treated as the hero of the story when the two both appear, and the halakhah almost always follows his school's way of thought. But is there something more to Shammai? What might he be trying to teach us if we just give him a chance? In this series, we will go deeper into a few of the texts in which we encounter these two rivals, and see if we can't redeem the villain, at least a little bit.

Rabbi Jennifer Greenspan is the Senior Rabbi of Beth Shalom Congregation. She received her Master of Arts in Rabbinic Studies and Rabbinic Ordination in 2019 from the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University and received the Henry Fisher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Jewish Studies. From 2019-2022, she served as Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis, Indiana
